Review on Italian Sicilian Scopa Playing Modiano by Brent Dietrich

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Decks are now made from cheap flimsy paper cards.

TLDR; The decks are made out of very cheap and flimsy cardboard. The attached photos show the difference in quality between the original deck and the last one I bought. Applying the same power to both cards shows how much cheaper and weaker the new decks are. Do not buy! A few decks were brought from Sicily. Taught his family and friends how to play scopa. They all liked it, so I bought a lot of their own decks online. I recently taught my good friend's teenage son the scopa when I was visiting them for the holidays. He and his side liked the game so much that I bought him a deck as a gift. When we opened it up to play Osprey, I discovered how poorly made the cards were this time. The decks I've bought in Sicily and the decks I've ordered in the past were made with such a strong and durable construction that I couldn't even bridge the decks. Just shuffling from above. Believe me, that's preferable. Designed for high-energy Osprey and Briscola games with lots of taunts and smacks on the cards, often accompanied by a glass of wine that can slosh a little onto the cards from time to time due to the abundance of hand gestures. Sturdy, durable, almost waterproof cards are essential to fully enjoy these traditional Italian card games. The cards in the latest deck I bought won't survive a day of playing hard enough with cards that people often carry around. Very disappointed, I will buy directly from the Modiano website, hoping that the quality of the cards will be of reasonable quality next time.
