Third time was adorable. I originally bought this as a Christmas present for my fiancé as we've been hiking more lately and enjoying alternative fire starting methods. The first few times I was able to get the board to smoke, but creating the embers or charcoal was the hardest part. The product manual explains it well, slowly but consistently start picking up the sawdust, let it smoke a little and then increase your speed and keep going at that speed for a lot longer than you think. To be honest I couldn't have done it on my own and my fiance and I negotiated twice before we got it right. Sitting on my knees was quite uncomfortable for me. Either way it works and I really like the ball bearing design. A regular magnesium starter is much easier, but it was definitely "fun" with an educational benefit. Haha
