I will be using this pepper mill because I bought it and it works, but being an Oxo I was hoping I would like it. I wish Oxo would bring back "OXO Good Grips 32180 Pepper Mill". It lasted 8 years and I loved it - it was wonderful. I then had a replacement for it, an almost identical OXO Good Grips 32180 Pepper Mill, but the bottom "cap" didn't hold up and it was only 4.5 years before the mill stopped working. Both of these previous Oxo models were designed with a bottom "cap" to prevent the peppers from falling out between uses (not a mess originally?). I liked the lid because it allowed me to grind in the lid while cooking and at the table. I could see how much pepper I was adding and see the coarseness of the grind, then sprinkle it evenly over my food. And I didn't steam the coffee grinder during preparation. With the "NEW OXO Good Grips Contoured Mess-Free Pepper Grinder" the grinding mechanism itself is dampened while the pot/pan grinds and the pepper clings to the grinder's steam, creating an unsightly mess on the grinder. [And some steam probably goes into the pepper tank.] I know, I know, all pepper grinders evaporate when used over a hot pot, but people don't see that mess when the grinder is all the way down; this one has a meat grinder on top and you can see it. The "NEW OXO Good Grips Contoured Messy Pepper Mill" is refilled from the bottom and it's not as easy as it should be as I suspect it's an Oxo. a commitment to handy design. I have long fingers and it can be a little tricky for me to grab and twist the flat twisting lid of the pepper container. When the lid is put on, it doesn't hold at all. Then it may take a few tries to get it right because it gets stuck in threads. It has to sit exactly on these threads so that it can be spun. In fact, it's a pain. Did you test it before its debut? At the table I like a slightly coarser grind and so far I've mostly used it in the kitchen. Time will tell whether I'm satisfied with the grinding degree setting - instead of the stepless screw setting that all my previous pepper mills had, there will only be a choice between a few sliding settings. I've been a fan of the Oxo design for years, but I'm not thrilled with this pepper mill. I would love to get my old favorite OXO Good Grips 32180 pepper grinder back; His replacement looks identical but has had about half its lifespan (and the bottom cover kept falling off). Also oxo: If you like pepper so much that you buy a meat grinder, you can also get a good peppercorn. I buy high quality Tellycherry peppercorns from a spice merchant. They have a wonderful flavor and not just the spiciness inherent in cheap peppers. A grinder that is pre-filled with regular peppercorns of unknown origin and processing standards (at your non-food manufacturing facility) and then stored who knows how long and under what conditions before being sold. It's not tempting, I just want a good pepper grinder. Selling an empty grinder is a cost saving that could be used to design a better lid.
