Review on Hario Mizudashi Cold Coffee 1000Ml: The Perfect Cold Brew Maker for Coffee Lovers by Wesley Sharp

1 year retrospective with jets

I've been using the 1000ml Mizudashi as my main coffee brewing method for about a year and I really like it. I had to tweak my method a bit to get the "perfect cup" but now that I've done it I'm very happy with the results. First things first: Apart from a few coffee stains on the filter, it is in the same condition as when it was delivered. The glass is very high quality and even the plastic parts hold up perfectly. For a $20 device, I expected some quality issues but didn't find any. Tips for success: - Use good coffee and clean water. Needless to say, there is a huge taste difference between freshly roasted quality grain and cheap grist from plastic containers at the grocery store. Choose quality and you will be satisfied. - Rough, rough, rough. If you have a good coffee grinder and can get a consistent bean size, use it. If you don't have a good coffee grinder (I don't), you'll have to buy the beans and then pre-grind somewhere else. I've found that finer grinds cause brewing issues, resulting in a noticeably weaker cup of coffee. Coarse grind = strong coffee! - Don't stress that whole stirring with chopsticks thing. Wet the filter, fill it 2/3 full with coarse ground coffee, then run the filtered water through the ground coffee, making sure it's all nicely saturated. The water will be clear at best. It's really normal. - Give it at least 12-14 hours. I usually finish a can and start the batch the next day at least 12 hours before I need it. There's nothing wrong with filling a saucepan with water and grinding it up, then putting it all in the fridge overnight. I even left it there for a few days (makes super mega ultra coffee, gives you the ability to see through walls and possibly control time yourself). - Be careful with this stuff. It's delicious, especially when you slice it with cream and some vanilla extract and pour it over ice cubes. I once drank a whole can in one day and thought I was going to die. Don't take it to heart. Moderation. Enjoy!
