This Bunn Speed Brew Thermal Coffee Maker first heats the water in the tank in 15 minutes. The instruction manual contains specific steps that must be followed before the coffee maker starts making coffee. I filled the thermos twice to fill the 50 ounce water tank. The water tank is an industrial grade stainless steel hot water storage tank. After brewing, the thermos keeps coffee hot for 2+ hours. This is a double wall vacuum insulated thermos. After the first 15 minutes, brewing takes a lot less time as you leave the coffee maker plugged in the whole time unless you are away from home for more than 4 days. Leaving the coffee maker plugged in keeps the water in the tank hot, allowing you to brew coffee in carafes or cups until the water tank is empty. Then you refill the tank and it heats up again and it takes 15 minutes again. I love that this coffee maker doesn't have a stovetop that can heat the coffee until it becomes a hockey puck or fills the house with the smell of burnt coffee. if you forget to turn it off. No rust on the bottom of the metal carafe. Nice! I did not perceive any smells or odors. I used regular ground coffee.
