For 70cm hotspots ONLY use

Don't buy this if you want good range in a compact package. (It doesn't exist anyway). This antenna was designed to make the radio less physically uncomfortable to operate when operating at very close ranges. It is NOT designed to project a signal further than a standard antenna. I've used it when talking about my DStar hotspot at home because it makes it a lot easier to carry my D74 around the house or garden. For that, it works GREAT! But as soon as I leave the house to go somewhere with the radio, I switch to a 1/4 wave pin (or dual/tri band). It is positioned as a 144/440/900MHz antenna. I disagree with its usefulness for VHF. This antenna is extremely inefficient at 144-148. Measured against my MFJ-259C it has an SWR > 3:1 between 146.7-147.4 with a minimum of 2.2:1 achieved at 146.9. At US APRS 144.39, the SWR is over 25:1. At frequencies of 430-450 it's not very good either. A few quick SWR checks with a cheap SW-33 SWR meter and the result is: SWR 430MHz = 4.5:1, SWR 440MHz = 2.8:1, SWR 449.95 = 2.6:1 A lot of SWR specs will vary depending on the radio being held, but generally I try to use it in the higher range. If I'm sitting next to my access point, I'd probably be better off fitting my radios with a simple 50 ohm dummy load. So if you want a small antenna to beam your signal across the yard or into another room, try this. If you want to talk over longer distances, get a longer antenna!
