Review on ๐ŸŽฅ Rode VideoMic GO: Lightweight On-Camera Microphone with Rycote Shockmount - Professional Sound for Filmmakers by Steven Lane

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Decent mic for my first attempt at recording video with a DSLR. TO UPDATE. 2 years old, now a lot of background noise.

Note, however, that this microphone does not use a battery and was designed primarily for digital SLR cameras that supply power through a microphone cable (Rode Accessories beautiful spiral that does not bother). Because of this, most DSLRs made today are compatible with this little gem. Check compatibility on the Rode website before purchasing. Setup is easy. Just go to YouTube and find the Rode Video Mic GO setting for your particular DSLR as it is a popular microphone around the world. If you have a Canon, Nikon, or other popular DSLR, someone has already "been there, got itโ€ and is ready to share their menu settings. I set it up and was up and running within minutes of receiving it in the mail and attaching it. on a Canon EOS T5i and made a short test video to make sure the settings are working. The cardioid characteristics are well thought out. I literally did the setup and went out to record a Missoula Children's Theater play for my kids and the recorded sound was fine, despite a typical hall not built for stage performance (i.e. the acoustics were built for lectures, not for musical performances). ). I bought them because I spontaneously decided to try video with a camera I no longer use regularly for sports and school (I have a Canon 5D Mk IV and a Canon 1Ds Mk III). For a quick put together combination of this mic and a Canon T5i DSLR it was really good. I'll obviously need to use it more often to get more out of this particular setup, but for someone like me who's never tried DSLR video, this mic has proven to be a solid choice. UPDATE: 2 years ago it started to give more and more background noise after a year of use no matter what camera body I used. This item didn't last very long. I can software remove the noise in post-processing, but it's easier to buy a better self-powered (battery) mic. It was decent while it lasted.

Pros
  • Rode has developed a video microphone with a narrow pick-up area that is focused directly in front of the microphone
Cons
  • Useless features
