Review on ๐Ÿถ USA-Made Primal Freeze Dried Chicken Nuggets: Complete Raw Diet Dog Food, Grain Free Topper/Mixer by Kelli Ervin

Great food with important caveats!

I have a 10 pound miniature dachshund who is sensitive to all common pet store foods. I've tried every brand including grain free, special diet, premium, etc. No matter what I gave her, she vomited EVERY day. She also had scaly, dry skin and terrible dermatitis on the edges of her ears. It only helped that the vet prescribed a daily dose of Pepcid AC. If she missed even one dose, the vomiting would return. Given that chronic antacid use causes nutrient malabsorption, I was dying to find a way to wean her off the drug! In desperation, I decided to try the raw meat diet for her. I started with frozen raw chicken dog food. I was so thankful it worked! I finally tried Primal's frozen raw chicken recipe and it was the best: no tummy issues, great skin and coat, and her dermatitis was completely gone, HOORAY! When I discovered the Primal brand freeze-dried chicken formula, I gave it a try and it seemed almost as good for her as frozen (I think I'm noticing a slight return of her dermatitis). BUT there are a few key caveats: 1) The feeding recommendations on the packaging are wildly inaccurate (I found the same to be true of their frozen formula)! My small dog is less active than average. According to the pack I should give her 4 nuggets a day. In fact, she needs *7* nuggets a day to maintain a lean and healthy weight. When I first fed her as Primal recommended, she was emaciated (ribs and spine were sticking out)! 2) It's very expensive! (Especially when you may have to feed almost twice what the packet says!) I can't imagine feeding this to a dog over 10lbs. a 14-ounce pack lasts about a week. 3) It can be hard to find - even online. A household item is therefore a must! Also good to know: the nuggets are too big and dry for my little dachshund to eat straight out of the pack. If you just pour water over them (even hot tap water) they will absorb little no matter how much it stands. They crumble pretty easily though, so I shred them and then add water to get a mushy consistency. Since my dog is very sensitive to other foods, I can use small pieces of nuggets as treats for him, which is a big advantage over the frozen version.
