We bought this for a move from Illinois to Kentucky. The range was pretty good, we had 3 cars so we needed something to keep in touch with each other. We configured them but were able to get the third one to work in encrypted mode. so we only used them on a specific channel. Depending on the range, it was sometimes difficult to understand what was being said. However, they saved battery power, and we still use them for communication when we're out in the field.
