Review on ๐Ÿ“ธ SUNWAYFOTO MFR-150S Wormdrive Macro Rail with Arca / RRS Compatible Clamp for Enhanced Precision Focus by Tim Rios

Revainrating 2 out of 5

non-standard product

You should be aware that this rail has more than one version, all of which are undocumented in a particular Chinese way. You play when you buy it. I received one that doesn't look like the picture. The Arca bolt has a much longer shank than the advertised photo, which limits the possible travel of the bottom bracket. The small feed knob has uneven knurling (again, different from the advertised photo) making small adjustments difficult. Of course, there are no instructions included. The splint comes in a box with foam that melts and sticks to the metal. After taking them out of the box, you need to clean the parts. Pros: Low profile so system height doesn't increase, which is especially useful when doing macros at ground level, and doesn't add too much torque arm when tilting the tripod head. Since there is no triggering system to move the slide quickly, it is very stable with no noticeable random movements. There are also adjustment screws for the game. Everything seems to be made of metal. Cons: The Arca knob is small and the low profile makes it difficult to tighten without touching the grease on the lead screw. The length of the pen shaft varies depending on the production batch. I have one with a longer shaft which limits travel (see my photo below) contrary to what is advertised. The position of the crank and arca handle is not the same for all patterns. Some have a handle on the same side as the Arca handle, others on the opposite side. Some have the backlash adjustment screws on the side of the crank, others on the side of the small knob for easier adjustment. Although the production is generally good, there are visible flaws. Mine has a dent in the arca clip and a bent position indicator. In addition, the cocking button is a bit crooked and not screwed in perpendicular to the rail. A screwdriver for tightening the clearance adjustment screws is not included. The heads of these screws were already scratched, slightly torn off, indicating that Sunwayfoto still does not pay attention to details. UPDATE: The second 150S I received had defective threads on the lead screw. Can't recommend it.

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Periodicity
