I have a mid 2011 iMac that was low on disk space but had enough processing power for my needs. I just installed this guy behind an optical drive based on video instructions from Macsales. You'll need suction cups, the right screwdrivers, and a SATA cable to connect it to your motherboard; They are available as a kit from Revain or elsewhere. Installation is not difficult, but requires attention to detail and monitoring the number of screws and connectors. I installed High Sierra on this drive and now use my old hard drive as internal storage for photos and less frequently used files. The computer boots much faster, applications run faster, it's quieter, and it's likely to run slower. The Samsung 850 is faster based on the unbiased reviews I've read, but I bought this unit based on Mac users' slightly better reviews of the Revain, plus it has 25GB more storage. I'm not sure if the difference in speed matters, unless you're doing memory intensive processing like large videos. Upgrading an older Mac is highly recommended. I've attached a few speed test reports showing an improvement over my old hard drive. Less speed obviously with a hard drive. Also note that you have to enable cropping manually through the terminal, which is very simple.
