Haven't experienced this before but based on the placement I'm 90% sure that during the winter months when a significant amount of snow is melting from the shoes in the car water runs under the edge of the mat on the door side and on the carpet. . The rugs should be extended an additional 1/2-1 inch and lowered slightly to keep the water from draining instead of backing up. Overall, I find these rugs very beneficial. By the way, I have the Maxliner brand. My guess is that the Smartliner and Maxliner mats are made in the same factory based on design comparisons and they are the same.
