I found that the water made my dog's paw stick to the clay, but not for a rat or cat, so you may need to experiment with that. This can be tricky, but remember you are working with a live animal and I love that you can start over. Since it's also foam, it can't "dry" completely and has some flexibility. If this happens to me I'll put them in the sun on a warm day and see if that helps.
