Pin is first and foremost practical. Instead of buying dowel rods, which are cheaper, and then cutting them to length, bending their ends, and crimping them a bit so they're roughly corrugated down the length, a dowel has all of these qualities. These dowel pins meet all requirements. I don't use dowels often - crackers have replaced them - but I will use them often when building the box for a quick mechanical and adhesive connection at the corners of the box. The grooves on these pins allow the adhesive to flow out while creating a larger adhesive surface and therefore a stronger bond. The beveled ends of the pins leave room for extra glue, helping to avoid hydraulic pressure that can cause wood to split when the pin is hammered. These pins do what they are supposed to do and they do it very well.
