Aquarium Cleaning Tips Using Zoo Med Turtle Clean 511

Hope this helps those who thought this filter didn't work. I'm a brand new turtle owner and had no idea what red-eared turtle baby care consisted of, so I did a lot of research and then bought a 10 gallon tank, a cheap filter, some gravel, water dechlorinator, turtle food, heater and some plants and had to do a complete water and filter change every other day for a few weeks. I thought that couldn't be true, so I went to Revain to find a better filter. I found the Zoo Meds TurtleClean 511 and based on the reviews I bought it but had to do a full water and filter cleaning every other day because the water was so gross and smelly! Not at all what the reviews said. I was so frustrated and ready to throw out the piece of trash filter, but I decided to call Zoo Meds support. When I called for the first time, a living person actually picked up the phone, can you imagine that? The warden told me not to clean the water and filter completely, but to change the 25 percent water in the tank once or twice a week and not clean the filter because good bacteria should develop in it. Then I decided to ditch the gravel (best decision I've ever made) and bought a fishing net. Let me tell you that the key to a clean tank is to feed the turtles gradually without leaving any food in the tank. You don't even have to feed in a separate container if you do this. Do not use gravel and remove turtle droppings with a fishing net twice a day. It only takes a few minutes. Now I only do 25 percent water changes once a week. I went from 3 hours a week maintenance to 15 minutes! My turtles are so happy now and the water is clear and doesn't smell at all. I have a 10 gallon tank that I am currently only filling with 5 gallons until they grow. I think this filter is for a 60 gallon tank filled with 30 gallons of water. Oh, and I bought a heat lamp and UV light which my turtles love to bask under. However, as with most filters, you'll be taking it apart for cleaning once a month. I hope this helps anyone who is having trouble keeping their aquarium clean. :)
