Review on πŸ–¨οΈ Efficient HP ScanJet Enterprise Flow 5000 s4 Sheet-feed OCR Scanner for Enhanced Document Processing by Dustin Lannan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Reliable option for the busy office worker

I spent an unusual amount of time reviewing this scanner to carefully study its features, strengths and weaknesses in hardware and software. Having used two other HP competitor products, I have done my best to approach this product without bias or prejudice. In terms of hardware, this ScanJet 5000 s4 is just as solidly built as many other HP office products. In over a month of daily use, I've encountered no problems scanning various types of paper documents, business cards, credit cards, and driver's licenses. The scanner handles every task effortlessly. Unpacking and installation went smoothly, the instructions that came with the scanner are easy to understand and shouldn't cause any problems for the user, be it a beginner or an expert. As long as your computer is equipped with USB3 ports, you will enjoy even faster data transfer speeds. The scanning speed depends primarily on the DPI setting you choose for your scanned documents. The lower the value, the faster the scanner pulls in documents. Even at 300 dpi I notice that the scanner is very fast. As for the interaction between software and hardware, I encountered a small problem that I could not solve in any way. I have two decades of experience in IT and the software left me at a loss. I'm used to using the scan button on the scanner to start scanning. I've been using a competitor's scanner for 6 years and have found that HP still has a lot of work to do. Half the time, pressing the button does nothing at all. Other times, the HP Smart Document Smart software will launch, which supports multiple scan profiles. For the rest of my life I can't get software that allows me to scan directly from a scanner just by pressing a button. I need to choose a scan profile (aka scan job settings) and scan from the software itself. Overall, the bundled HP software is probably the fastest and easiest to use of any application that comes with the scanner. The scanner comes with several software applications that appear to overlap. The PaperPort scanner software (developed by Nuance Software) is a bit sluggish and loads slower than usual. It includes a basic PDF viewer and Nuance Cloud Connector. The Cloud Connector is designed to "connect and convert documents across different existing cloud storage and online document websites". It created a network folder on my laptop. However, it didn't come with instructions on how to use it or integrate it with my existing cloud storage applications. CardIris is a software solution for scanning business cards; Despite an interface that looks 2007 or so, the program comes in very handy if you still collect business cards. With ReadIris you can scan PDF documents and convert them into a searchable/editable format. Overall, the included app bundle is usable, even if the user interface could be improved a bit. Please note that neither Cardiris nor ReadIris are included on the supplied CDs. You need a working internet connection to download it from the HP website by following the links in the HP Scan Jet Flow app. This ScanJet can also work wirelessly, but requires its own HP wireless adapter. Overall, the price is higher than its direct competitors. , the scanner has a number of advanced features such as auto color detection, auto cropping, auto exposure, auto orientation, OCR, edge removal, background cleanup, hole removal, color dropout, page straightening, scan to cloud, scan to email, PDF protection , Preset misfeed detection, Batch processing, Barcode, Scan to multiple destinations. If I can fix the hardware scan button issue, I'll upgrade my rating to 4 stars.
