Review on Nikon 50mm f/1.8D Lens: Perfect for Nikon DSLR Cameras! by Mohd Arif ᠌

A wonderful product, its nice to use.

According to statistics, this lens is overwhelmingly the first on the camera after the whale, and I am no exception! In comparison with the "whale", this lens, with skillful use, allows you to make portraits on the street of a sufficiently high quality, incomparable with the "whale". Due to the stronger blurring of the background, it gives the photo a volume, which is more important in the "street" portrait, even the light is inferior to it in importance (in the studio, on the contrary). A blurred background allows the person looking at the photo to understand the volume, to see the most important thing in the photo - the model. In the case when there are a large number of details of different brightness in the background (for example, branches, grass, trees, landscape) in a photograph taken with this lens, the background looks rough - it is full of sharp brightness transitions, this greatly spoils the perception photography and, in my opinion, is the most important drawback of this lens. It also has a strong effect on the fact that due to the insufficient focal length for a portrait (50mm), and for a classic portrait it is 85 or 125, or even 200, it does not allow making a full-length portrait. background blur in this case is not enough, this feature also applies to its older brother 50/1.4. The lens does not shine with sharpness, but at apertures from 1.8 to 2.5 it frankly soaps and this gap should be used only in extreme cases. In general, you need to shoot with an aperture of 2.8. And if the lighting allows, then use 3.5 or 4. It seems to me that this lens was invented specifically so that the buyer would want to buy another one after buying it, and not because it is bad, the lens is excellent, but simply because this is a lens for everything, and a portrait lens can only be portrait lens, for macro photography - macro lens, for landscape - wide-angle lens, and so on.

Pros
  • - Worth a penny. - Excellent autofocus, fast, accurate, tenacious, but relatively loud. - Metal mount, which is a rarity on "entry" level lenses. - Thanks to the front lens recessed into the body, no hood and protective filter are needed.
Cons
  • - The rough bokeh that appears depending on the scene (part of the image in the blur zone) is a very significant drawback and one of the main differences from 50 / 1.4! - f1.8 - f2.2 are practically not working. - Quite a strong buzz of the autofocus motor, when compared with the "silent" ultrasonic. - Lack of autofocus on younger Nikon models.
