For years I thought I had a weird non-standard installation. I had an old worn one of these that was probably 30 years old. When I took it off, I couldn't find a universal replacement to replace it at any hardware store, just as I couldn't find this item at any hardware store. It turns out that a small threaded piece of brass (the new one that comes with this unit) screws onto the tube. It stayed in place when I removed the old tub spout. I think he froze in place. I didn't even know it was a detachable fitting so no other brand would fit. When I discovered it on Amazon it was a direct replacement for my old Delta unit and was exactly what I needed. Not wanting to damage my pipe, I removed the new brass insert from the spout and left the old one on the tank pipe (I used a new o-ring from the brass insert). It snapped into place, plastic but held up well. Just don't use abrasives on it and you'll be fine.
