The awl easily pierced the rubber and I succeeded.
I'm giving them a 3 because they aren't "real" safety eyes. They do not come with washers to secure them. I have work to do. I bought rubber earring protectors (see photo) and used an awl to make a hole in the rubber backing. The awl easily pierced the rubber and I was able to make the exact hole I needed to attach the grommets. The only reason I have such trouble is that it's hard to find 3mm true "safety" puck eyes.
