Fantastic when it works

When it works as it should, the Nikon 2.8 28-70mm is a great lens. I was amazed at the picture quality when I first took it out. I took it to the farm pizzeria to try it out and got some amazing shots at the farm during the golden hour. The lens is heavy, but that never really bothered me. Sometimes I wish I had 4mm more as 28 is a boring wide angle, but it's functional and meets my low light needs as a business owner. Like the standard 24-70mm, this is a great all-around lens. What matters is when it works. I noticed some early chipping, some autofocus issues. At 70mm or so it was a bit buggy and sometimes I had to zoom out, refocus and zoom back in. The engine didn't always sound ok, but it only happened occasionally and it felt like I could live with it. However, last weekend on a mission it broke completely - the shutter didn't work and didn't focus. The error seems to have disappeared after unscrewing the lens and removing the battery. However, this morning it happened again and now appears to be permanent. I read (too late to prevent this purchase) that the 28 was notorious for AF engine wear for some reason. This seems to apply to mine, and it seems to apply to some others I see here. I felt I had to write a review as this seems to be a common problem and not just mine. I could try to fix it, but I might just sell it when it's fixed and within 24 hours instead. When it worked, it was an impressive piece of glass. Be careful, it's gambling.
