Overheats at idle

A 1996 Baja Islander 180 with a 4.3LX engine overheats at idle. It had a new sub-block water impeller and idled to just over 200 degrees. Anything over idle and the temperature dropped quickly. I replaced the thermostat with this Sierra 160 degrees and the problem was solved. Now the temperature regulates itself normally.
