Bought for an injured 5 year old 80lb GSD mix that I rescued. This dog just looked miserable in its cage when it was rescued. It lay there for over a year and no one needed it. For some reason I kept coming back to this and searching for it on Petfinder. Followed his profile lol. Anyway, I ended up adopting him. He was horrified. How visually stunning! Poor boy. He was a nightmare on the leash. It was dangerous to pull that hard. There was no aggressive bone in his body, he just wanted to smell and see every dog. He scared people to death, but I knew it was kind. So I started training him seriously. I started with a soft leader (3pm on Revain). He absolutely will not tolerate such a headdress. He hated it but we used it for a couple of weeks anyway. He had violent seizures like a toddler. It was terrible. I really started to wonder if he would ever change his ways. Next, the traditional tableware. It's about 20 times better than before, but still a long way off. We took him to Canton on the first Monday and he was pretty good because he was very scared. We walked past a company that makes chest compression straps and it was amazing. We bought a harness and a two piece bungee cord which is great. This setup increased it by 50% over the next month. Oh the whole time I was using compressed air (for the keyboard) to fix it when we passed other dogs. That usually helped, but he still barked, barked softly (maybe shepherd) and jumped on other dogs. Never aggressive, it was always a demand for a high game. OK, so on. Pug Harness (Joy Ride). We use this harness for trips to pet stores. It's great for that purpose and has a seat belt attachment. But we're stuck at 50% and I'm very impatient. sooo I switched to a plastic collar. This worked well and got it to 65%. He was still responsive to the dogs and still pulling, albeit lightly at the time. So I thought it was time to investigate stun collars. I chose the basic from Educator. I received it and realized that all I needed was sound and vibration. So I sent the shocker back and got this one which allows you to change the vibration level, light and sound. Andy immediately went from 65% to 100%. I was surprised. My neighbors were amazed. I can literally lead him off the leash with 100% confidence. Of course I don't do that for the most part, but I work with him off-leash whenever possible. I usually use clay. I've found I rarely need anything because when I put the collar on he knows he needs to be on his best behavior. I think a stun gun might be a better choice for a more aggressive or stubborn dog. Andy is sensitive and 100% non-aggressive. I'm definitely alpha in our pack and he respects me. Not only has this training improved our working relationship, but it has boosted his confidence exponentially. He no longer flinches when men try to pet him. He is still shy/aloof around strangers, but not intimidated. Big difference! He was a risky adoption. It was reported that he had security issues and had attacked another dog in his adopted home. With the right guidance and training, he has grown into my best dog. Give adult rescuers a chance. With the right tools, they can become best friends. This is my fifth consecutive rescue in an adult with reported behavior problems. The remaining 4 turned out to be excellent, well-balanced and valuable pets.
