Review on Kolpin Universal IRS Receiver Hitch by Eric Jefferson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

2004 Yamaha Grizzly

First off I'm giving this clutch 3 stars because it works the way it is, at least most of the time. Trouble is, at least on the 660 Yamaha Grizzly, that clutch points down about 20 degrees or more. It's kind of silly looking down with just a receiver and a ball. Additionally, the only reason I bought this hitch is so I can use the rear quad hitch. Ever since I got a Kolpin Gun Boot and a storage box (which also fits a passenger safely and comfortably) my rear trunk has run out of room. If I put something on the front rack (basically a chainsaw with gas and oil) I can't see where I'm going. I'm tired of hitching a trailer to haul just a few items that can slide around or fall apart. The ATV receiver stand works great and works well most of the time, but it hits big bumps. Since it works almost the way it is, I know I wouldn't have any problems if the rack was anywhere close to level. I don't use it on very bad trails but I do have hills. In order to keep roads and paths open, I have to remove or saw down fallen trees that are blocking paths. It seems to me that in trying to make the hitch the "right size" no real effort was made to get it right. Since the frame is at an angle, the coupling is also at an angle. On my model there are four U-clamps that attach the hitch to the frame (the ATV frame is made of tubing). The set contains several additional parts for different models. One of these kits has two spacers that fit almost perfectly when placed between the quad's lower frame and the clutch plate. However, I am concerned that the weight on the hitch will crush the quad's tubes. I'm certainly not an engineer but I think someone would need to fabricate another plate of the same thickness or thicker for me to put between the ATV frame and hitch with spacers so the print is on the entire plate, since this hitch was originally designed and not on the frame tube. In addition, this towbar has a threaded metal tube welded in one position (to mount another model or two). This tube had to be screwed on so it could be removed when not needed. Why is this weird hose hanging down that doesn't fit most models? More importantly, instead of welding this pipe in one place, the coupling had to be taped in various places to allow this pipe to be adapted to many more models. The bolt that fits this pipe is the same size as the original ATV hitch. On my model, the quad's hitch is about an inch below this slanted angle. If you were to pull on the bottom of the hitch to straighten it, it would only deflect 3 inches. Since the stock quad hitch does not move independently of the quad frame, attaching the receiver hitch to the quad hitch would make it much more durable. I thought of taking a 1/2" to 1" rod and drilling two holes in it so I could pull the hitch straight out. I was then able to screw her threaded tube onto this rod. I could then bolt the bar to the quad hitch. This would not only relieve the "in and out” stress, but also the "up and down” stress. Eventually Kolpin had to add another plate with spacers or otherwise to mount the 2004 Yamaha 660 Grizzly as advertised. Also, they had to make this threaded pipe adjustable or just make an adapter to attach this threaded part to the ATV hitch. Properly installing this hitch wouldn't have cost them a few more dollars, which I would have happily paid. Instead, having someone make parts to modify this kit to fit properly, I'll likely have more money than the kit's original cost. Can the Kolpin 85100 receiver hitch be attached to a Yamaha 660 Grizzly? -- Yes. Did Kolpin do anything to make it fit right? No! I'm not migrating it to amazon.com; They have always been great and I can't imagine them eating up the cost of returning this product. Besides, it didn't cost a fortune. I have to decide whether to live with the loss or spend money to fit my ATV.
