I'm amazed at how video projectors have developed in recent years. When we built our house, I set aside a special room in the basement for a dark theater. This is the perfect location as there are no windows and you can turn the theater pitch black if you wish. Here I evaluated the VS800. For evaluation, I left the rear lights on, as I usually use them in the theater. Although the theater uses full surround sound, I chose to connect the projector to the Apple TV+ via HDMI to get a good test of the unit's internal speakers. I compared the projector's performance to my $3,500 Sony 1080P projector. Both projectors have been rated at 800 ANSI lumens. To my amazement, the VS800 actually outperformed the Sony with a 10-foot screen. You can see the comparison in the photos of the two screens I took side by side. The Sony was slightly better in lighting and slightly richer colors, but hardly worth the $3,350 price difference between the two. I really felt that the VS800 had a more natural color. The resolution of both was fairly comparable, but with an edge over the VS800. The speakers sound really good for a device of this size. While the Sony is fixed, the VS800 is extremely portable and can be deployed anywhere there's a blank wall. Although there aren't many settings like color temperature etc, the main features are there. The only thing I would wish for is more complete user instructions. What I also really liked was the quiet running of the fan. I placed the projector directly behind my first row seat, within 3 feet of where I was seated, and at the volume, which was about halfway, I didn't even notice. Also, if the Sony needs a few minutes to warm up, the projector's LED lamp will light up immediately. I used the Apple+ for most comparisons to get an idea of how it handles streaming and audio. It was flawless and comparable to Sony. There was no lag and I liked the overall look better than Sony. The colors looked a little more realistic. The remote control is easy to use and has all the important functions to control the projector. You can also bounce the signal off the screen to use it instead of directing it towards the front of the projector. Wi-Fi worked well if you wanted to stream from an iPhone or iPad. Verdict --- If you're looking for a small, lightweight projector that rivals much more expensive devices, look no further. The VS800 is a good choice, particularly for its brightness and 4K capabilities when using HDMI and a 4K device like the Apple 4K TV+.
