Review on πŸ’» Enhance Your iMac 2011 Performance with the OWC Digital Thermal Sensor HDD Upgrade Cable (OWCDIDIMACHDD11) by Aaron Gordon

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works in my 21.5 " iMac

Bought to install an SSD in my 2011 21.5" iMac. I replaced the original magnetic drive with an SSD which required a converter bracket to change from 2.5" to 3.5" in the bay as expected. The OWC site and a bunch of installation videos didn't really indicate the need for a mount so I bought it just in case and ended up needing it. The thermal cable was easy to install, but routing it under the iMac components was a little tricky and time-consuming. I ended up carefully sliding it under the SSD bracket where there seemed to be plenty of room. Handling this cable for installation took a lot of time in the overall process. Otherwise, it was easy to make connections and attach a temperature sensor. While the cable is designed to keep system fans from running all the time, it feels overpriced for a SATA cable. While it was necessary to monitor the hard drive temperature, I think it was quite expensive and essentially negated the huge advantage I had with the 480GB SSD to upgrade my 2011 Mac. I understand the need for a cable is due to Apple's design, but I just can't figure out why the cable is so expensive.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • There are new competitors
