Review on πŸ”’ Camco 44333 5/8" Thumb Operated Offset and Straight Cam Lock: Convenient and Versatile Security Solution by David Skyline

No instructions and too easy to disassemble too much

I installed one of these in a tool box where he replaced the lock with a key. It comes with all the parts you need to install it properly and works great. However, I ran into a couple of unexpected issues: 1) There are no instructions to help you install. At the very least, it would be nice to know the dimensions of the hole this lock requires. The hole *must* be the correct diameter and shape for this cam lock to work properly. It turned out I already had a hole of the right diameter for the flat sides and I just had to make the hole elongated by filing it a bit with a semi-circular file, but I had to figure this all out by trial and error . 2) During a test fit of a cam lock into the hole I was drilling, the locking plate holding the rotary mechanism came loose and the lock fell apart completely in my hand, throwing small pieces everywhere. It's very simple and I was able to reassemble it properly once I found all the parts (including the ball bearing trying to be forgotten) but I was surprised at how easily the locking plate came loose. In normal use this will not present a problem as the screw and pivoting cam will hold it in place, but it would be good to be aware of any edges and bottlenecks during trial assembly that could stress the cylinder in unexpected directions 3) The screw that ended up on the surprise is easy to damage, and I plugged the cross hole by simply inserting the screw with a manual (non-electric) screwdriver. The screw should be of better quality. Overall, this is not the highest quality device, but it is definitely an adequate device at a good price. The thumb latch has some play, but makes a satisfying click in either rest position and stays where you left it (open or closed). There are two cams allowing for three cam offsets and the cams can be moved allowing the lock to be opened slightly left or right as required. The cams are also made from decent steel, which I can tell from experience is easy to grind to length if you want a shorter one (I had to grind almost 3/4" the length to fit in my toolbox ).

Pros
  • Perfect for a new or replacement installation
Cons
  • Negative gift
