If you put the belts on incorrectly they obviously don't tighten at all. BUT, if properly installed, they should hold significant tension. At least enough to stay in place when holding the kayak while cruising. When I pull them tight they seem to hold up. But then when I try to shake the kayak (which can be unintentional in traffic) it moves slightly and the straps slip off. If you look closely, you'll see that the tension springs on either strap aren't strong enough to carry any significant loads. It's like using cheap snap buckles made for children's pants belts. To hold things in place I had to use the cam buckle straps I already had.
