I've been using it in Oregon for a year now where it rains and gets muddy. I think it's doing a great job. I first soak the carpet in one of those dirt buckets overnight to soften all the dirt and grime, then drain it, put it in the washer, add 5 ounces of carpet detergent and do a 2-rinse hand towel load. so they get another good bath and all the soap is washed away. I have a POS washer, so I don't care if I kill it with horsehair, but you can treat yours differently. I hang it out of the washing machine on a line to dry. When it dries I test its water resistance by dripping some water on it and seeing if it drips. If that's the case, then I'm fine. Otherwise it must be processed with Rug Proof. So far only rugs that I have previously washed with detergent have required a Rug Proof treatment. So once you start using this stuff, chances are you'll get a few washes without doing anything else. BTW I use a clean dirt bucket when I do rug proofing. Load a clean, dry rug into a trash can, pour in 5 gallons of water, pour in 17 ounces of Rug Proof, and then use a clean toilet plunger to stir the mixture. You don't want it on your hands, it's annoying. Leave on for 2 hours or overnight, then remove the cover, squeezing out the liquid. For a quick, soap-free wash, pop the duvet in the washing machine and let it rinse. (Most new rinse and wash cycles do not remove the entire mat sufficiently) Hang to dry. Now that you have a perfectly waterproof mud bucket, go ahead and waterproof all that old ski gear, tents, mittens, gloves, raincoats. almost any material that needs to be waterproof and breathable. Updated part: I still use it. I think it still works well on fairly new duvets or ones where the waterproof membrane isn't damaged or outdated. Once it works, it probably won't work, but I don't think anything will work.
