As others have reported these supports are not suitable for some shelves. I had two units, one 3ft wide and the other 4ft wide. I noticed that the vertical supports on the 3ft wide shelves are slightly different and the connector doesn't fit. It fits wider shelves. The bars were exactly 1.25 inches wide to fit these connectors. So now look for 1.5" wide plugs.
