Poor WiFi performance on my 7 year old Dell Windows 10 laptop. Excellent performance when connected directly to the router. It turned out that this must have been a problem with the WLAN connection in the 2.4 GHz band. I disabled the laptop's internal 2.4GHz WiFi card (Windows Device Manager) and installed the Cudy USB adapter. Windows 10 installed the adapter immediately (no internet connection). I had to log into my wireless network again. The NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 R8000 Tri-Band (2.4/5/5GHz) router has Smart Connect enabled (FYI). BOOM. Dell laptop connected wirelessly on 5GHz frequency with excellent WiFi performance. Very happy.
