Review on πŸ“± Highly Versatile RAM-HOL-PD3U Quick-Grip Phone Holder for RAM Diamond Ball Bases by Michael Ward

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Impressive. good for dash mount

Short Version: Holds the phone VERY securely, easy to install, only takes 1 second to insert or remove the phone. Now for the long version, in case you're interested. I was trying to find a way to mount my phone on the bike, not the old Garmin. This piece of plastic matched the previous owner's brackets perfectly (I think it was a SW-Motech item?) except that it could only be mounted in portrait mode. This is NOT a fault of this article, just to be clear: if I had invested in a ball-jointed RAM product, I could mount my phone at any angle. This is 100% the fault of the specific base I'm using and I don't think it's a RAM product. As for the holder itself - the total installation time was about 30 minutes and the base I used was much more complex than the standard RAM base. I'm sure you can set it up in 15 minutes or less if you already have a RAM ball installed on your bike. The springs are really damn strong. It easily fits my Samsung Galaxy S5 with the Otterbox Commuter series and has plenty of free storage space. I'm pretty sure a Galaxy Note with a bulky protective case will do just fine, although that might be the limit. It's VERY safe. At first I was nervous, eventually I trust a sub $20 piece of plastic and springs with a $500+ device that I depend on to stay connected every day for work and social life . My trust was absolutely not in vain. It took me about 1 second to put my phone in there. Wow. On the way out of my area at about 20 mph, I intentionally ran into a few potholes that I usually avoid. The phone didn't even move. Damn impressed. I stop for a cup of coffee on my way to work and it pours out in about 1 second. wow again He'd now driven several hundred miles, accelerating from parking lots to freeways, hitting and avoiding bumps, making emergency maneuvers, all without a doubt that the phone was secure. If you intend to use it for off-road riding, you can elastic it just for security, but it might not even be necessary. It vibrates a bit, but then again, I don't use a RAM rubber ball, so it might not vibrate as much if you do. It doesn't cover my camera, which is good, but it's mounted so the camera faces my V-Strom's windshield, and the vibrations it picks up look like I'm driving a submarine. Not bad for a DVR, but not good for setting up a motologger like mine. Again, the RAM ball mount can make a big difference. For now I'm happy with the visibility of Google Maps navigation and the ability to see caller ID when listening to a call via Bluetooth on my helmet.
