The stand is solid metal and appears to hold the laptop firmly. The ports are a little tight so I would adjust them before putting my laptop on them. While the base's design gives it stability, it does make it a bit springy when trying to use the keyboard on a laptop. I got used to it quickly, but others may not get used to it. If you're going to increase your laptop, you'll probably want to use a separate keyboard and mouse anyway, so that probably won't be a problem. Some might want it to be easier to adjust, but once I got it where I wanted it I never adjusted.
