Review on Sony DVDirect DVD Recorder VRDMC5 by David Roberts

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Experimenting with a Canon HF-10 camcorder

I bought this DVD recorder mainly to archive dozens of my VHS tapes to DVD. He does a great job with that! I also have a Canon model HF-10 HD camcorder. I didn't buy the Canon DVD burner recommended for the HF-10 because it didn't seem as versatile or didn't connect to a VHS player. The Sony VRDMC5 works very well with inputs from my VHS players via yellow video and audio. red/white cable. Very convenient. I haven't tried the S-cable connection yet. The Sony VRDMC5 can also record directly from my Canon HF-10 camera via the Canon "AV Out" (yellow video; red/white audio cable). However, I haven't been able to get the Sony VDRMC5 to read SDHC cards made with my Canon HF-10 (Sony's manual says it can read SDHC cards 4GB or smaller). Of course, Sony makes no claims about compatibility with other brands. In fact, I couldn't get the Sony VDRMC5 to read any file type (.avi; .jpeg-4 or .wmv) I copied to SDHC cards. I'm still experimenting. And as others have noted in the reviews, the Sony USB port doesn't read data from my computer, portable flash drive, or Canon HF-10 camcorder. Sony read digital stills from my Canon PowerShot digital camera, model A720IS, copied and burned them onto a 2GB SD card on DVD.

Pros
  • Record AVCHD video from a Sony HDD/MemoryStick Handycam camcorder to DVD
Cons
  • Update available
