I have been feeding my 17 year old 5 pound Chihuahua Nutro Small Bits for Seniors since she was 7 years old. She liked it and ate it with gusto. Then Nutro reformulated and I had to switch to Nutro Wholesome Essentials, a small breed food with chicken, brown rice, and sweet potatoes. I ordered the last 5lb bag on 09/20/18. In late November, Koko started refusing to eat it even when I upped the real chicken, beef, or turkey mix. It got to the point where Koko was only eating one meal a day instead of two. She cautiously approached her plate, sniffed it and left. This behavior was repeated many times a day until she was hungry enough to eat. Eventually I smelled a rat and smelled the pellets (stored in a sealed plastic container where I kept them for years). It no longer smelled of delicious chicken, but of a mixture of fish and cardboard. I wouldn't eat either! I can only imagine that something went wrong in the Nutro manufacturing process or pellet storage before they became too old to be sold or eaten. Needless to say I am moving from Nutro to Hills and in the future will be using my eyes and nose to make sure the food is fresh. All lovers of fur animals are well advised to be on the lookout. In otherwise healthy dogs. even though they are old they refuse to eat, something is wrong with the food and their noses are not easily fooled!
