Hasn't worked for a month! Saved information is now lost!

A gift for my teenage daughter, the chain broke in the first week but it didn't matter much. However, after a month the drive doesn't show up on any computer we plug it into, so she can't access any of the information she had on it, and she's devastated at having lost things she really cares about worked hard for hours.
