This review is dedicated specifically to the ATH-M50x velor ear pads. First warning: the ear pads dramatically change the sound performance of the M50x. I'm surprised by people who say they don't notice the difference. This basically makes them different headphones. It really changes it up in a good way - for example, the soundstage is much more open. Since the pads sound so open, it's almost a mixture of closed and open headphones. If you've ever tried any of the Grado series, it turns the M50x into a more Grado-like sound. This is good in many ways as there is better instrumental separation. Cymbals sound clearer and different instruments are more recognizable. However, high frequencies are heavily emphasized. I listen to a wide range of music and rock, classical and acoustic all sound great. It's blown out for many EDMs that really emphasize the mid-high spectrum. In some songs (Marshmello - Alone [Slushii Remix]) or The Weekend - The Hills (RL Grime Remix) high frequencies are so emphasized that you can't hear them. It really doesn't work for dubstep heavy EDM. But there are significant improvements for rock, acoustic, jazz, classical and rock. I think the best way to see if they're right for you is to try a few Grados. If you like the sound, then expect something similar. However, they are incredibly comfortable. They also let more sound through, but not quite as well as open-back headphones.
