Review on πŸ”§ WEN 6377 Dual Head Variable Speed Drywall Tool by Steve Campbell

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Does what it's supposed to, sanding drywall or smoothing dirt.

Bought as I plan to renovate and repaint the walls in our finished basement. I used to use a manual dust-free drywall sander that you plug into a shop vacuum, but for the price I thought I'd give this Wen unit a try. I chose it among other models because it has a triangular head that vibrates/oscillates as well as a round rotating head. I know from car body and wood construction that an orbital or orbital sander works better than a circular/rotary sander. The rotation is good for quick and heavy stock removal, but you need to know how to use it, and using it incorrectly will scratch the surface and could come off you. My experiences and observations are as follows: With a motor mounted on an end or head unit, it is difficult and inconvenient to use on the ceiling. You must take care to keep the main unit level on the surface, start slowly and gradually increase the speed. On the walls, this isn't that much of a problem, but you still need to be careful and keep your head on the wall. Even if you've never worked with drywall and don't know how to smooth out or repair a joint, this sander won't make you a pro or even a good hobbyist, you need to know what to do. and how to do it in the first place, it just makes the job easier. I had no problems with dust at all. I hooked it up to a 6.5 HP shop vacuum. with a dust bag in the canister, and no dust came out at all. The key to reducing dust exposure is a powerful industrial vacuum cleaner with a clean filter that offers strong suction and airflow. It's still necessary to wipe down or vacuum the walls before painting, but that's just good practice. There were no problems with the grinder at all, nothing broke, did not overheat, did not fall apart, in general it is worth the money.

Pros
  • Head mounted 5 amp motor provides maximum torque to the grinding wheel
Cons
  • Large and bulky
