As a portable CAC card reader this worked great. for the first six months. I used it at most once a week for remote access to my work network. I had no problems until one morning when I kept getting the "cannot read certificates" error. I noticed the device (reader) was heating up, so I unplugged it and let it cool down while I restarted the computer. About an hour later I tried again - that's when my house started smelling like melting plastic - like something electronic was on fire. By the time I found out it was the CAC reader and unplugged it, it had already melted to the point where I couldn't close the device (the sides fold in when not in use). Besides, it also damaged my CAC ID and burned the metal chip. I had to go to the institution to get a new card and also a new card reader. I bought this device because I liked the compact design that made it easy to carry around in meetings or work remotely. If the device had just met its death I would give it 3 stars as it is relatively cheap and lasted about 6 months. but as it damaged my ID I had to replace it - one star is about as much as I can justify. The inconvenience this device caused me was more than just a broken device/waste of money. It cost me productivity from work and so I don't think it's worth buying/risking again.
