SCR3500A problems on Mac OS X

I have had two SCR3500 readers in the last 7 years and they have worked fine. However, I cannot get the SCR3500A to work on my Mac systems. The reader is visible on the USB bus, but the CAC card is never recognized and no LEDs are lit. If you are using libcackey as middleware and cannot update Identive drivers, beware of SCR3500A readers. CAC card: Oberthur One 128 v5.5 Dual Tested: MacBook OS X 10.9, libcackey 0.78 - no response. MacBook OS X 10.11, libcackey 0.78 - no response. MacBook OS X…

The best chip card reader I can find!

I've always hated big card readers when I had to work from home. They are clumsy and usually have a tail resembling a slumbering viper. For me, a self-proclaimed minimalist living in a small space with my wife and two daughters, a small and portable card reader was a must. This meets all my expectations and is relatively cheap. I will say that sometimes you have to be careful when you fold and unfold it which I always use for map reading. This was not the first time I had to buy this card…

Pros
  • Ideal for a small house
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.

Very nice and portable small USB CAC card

Works great! Now here's the trick! It doesn't work the way a normal/stupid person would expect! You really need to work, go online and type the CAC card access driver into a search engine. Download the appropriate one for your software. I didn't realize I had to do all this, but obviously you have to do this for all types of drivers and computers. Well, if you have a Mac like mine, you may have trouble loading the driver. I know it's stupid, but here's how it works: You open a Safari. In the…

It works! Comfortable and goes well with a PIV lanyard

Received this just a month before the COVID-19 home working rule came into force for me. I bought this and another brand because they both looked like they would work, but I wanted to compare them to the one my friend was using (and they were both cheap!). My PIV card is a standard federal card; Maps I've seen issued by other agencies and DOE labs appear to be the same (or at least very similar). I use my PIV for authentication to access government applications, digitally sign documents and…

Great CAC reader, wish the DOD setup was easier.

This unit is great in its own right. The small size is incredible. We use it on 2 devices, both Macs. I even use it on an expansion port with an imac because the USB is at the back. There is no problem for the Mac to recognize the device. The reader is about the size of a small USB stick and protrudes slightly. Just be careful not to install anything on your CAC card or reader while using it. Customization is a different story, but it's not the device's fault. The Department of Defense has…

Worked great for 6 months then I melted and fried my CAC chip

As a portable CAC card reader this worked great. for the first six months. I used it at most once a week for remote access to my work network. I had no problems until one morning when I kept getting the "cannot read certificates" error. I noticed the device (reader) was heating up, so I unplugged it and let it cool down while I restarted the computer. About an hour later I tried again - that's when my house started smelling like melting plastic - like something electronic was on fire. By the…
