Only works with Mac Book Air 2013 or later. A 512GB NVME SSD from Western Digital works great with it. It costs about half what Apple charges and can be done quickly yourself. Just make sure the NVME stick is single-sided. This means that only one side has chips. The other side should be flat (no chips). Once installed, I was able to install Mac OS Big Sur. The operating system installed immediately and is now very fast with 512 GB of memory. (I originally had 128GB of storage and it ran out quickly.)
