Review on Enhance Your Lighting with GE Lighting 85392: High-Performance 500 Lumen Replacement by Maria Noble

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Very good but not perfect - slow light

Update Now that I've been using these lamps for over a month I finally used a stopwatch to see how long it takes them to get bright. You are in the bathroom and you get enough dim light to see when you flip the switch (dim = maybe 15%-20% of full power). It takes a whopping 50-60 seconds to reach the 50% level. 80%+ takes a full 2 minutes. Full brightness (when you can no longer tell that there is a CFL coil inside the sphere) takes just under 3 minutes. If the bulbs are turned off for just a few minutes (2-3), they will immediately return to almost full brightness. I would still buy them despite the slow warm up, but downgrading my rating to 3 stars because 3 minutes is a long wait for full brightness. If only I could find them at a reasonable price. , I would replace 2 of the 12 bulbs with LEDs to give the room more light while it warms up. The 12-bulb Aster Bath is a real energy hog with 12- to 40-watt bulbs, and those lights are on about three hours a day, which is 45 cents a day in California / $14 a month / $165 a year in California costs, so these 12 bulbs should be save me $122 a year. I replaced all 12 clear bulbs with these white compact fluorescent bulbs and they are much brighter than the old ones. They get bright enough after 15 seconds, they peak around 45 seconds, but I can live with that minor inconvenience for the money saved. I'm going to put them in two other bathrooms - one has six lightbulbs, the other has 4. In these rooms I'm going to use a regular lightbulb and the rest CFLs. So I get a little more initial light and still get a significant cost saving.
