Review on Ubiquiti UniFi nanoHD 802.11ac Wave2 MU-MIMO Enterprise Access Point (Compact Version) UAP-NANOHD-US by Laurie Thomas

Poor range, read between the lines

I bought this as a WiFi upgrade in my 1800 sq ft house and wasn't impressed. Sure, I get incredibly high speeds around the device, but move 30 feet away and the signal drops off quickly. Outdoors, where my 3-year-old TP-Link router provides adequate coverage, I have to wave my phone in the air and hope the connection doesn't drop. Yes, it is connected to my gigabit switch. Yes, I installed a controller and used a non-overlapping WiFi channel. No, 2.4GHz is not crowded. Yes, I installed it correctly face down on the ceiling. Too bad for Ubiquity that their wide range is difficult to navigate and doesn't *clearly* indicate that this product has a poor reach. If you read between the lines of the specs, it makes sense to understand HD for "high density," but it didn't really become clear until I spent my time setting up the device. With everyone and their moms raving about Unifi these days, you'd think their latest product, which makes claims like "Price/Performance Leader in Enterprise Wi-Fi" and "The Latest in 802.11ac Wi-Fi Technology" cites Wave 2 MU- MIMO " and "AP UniFi nanoHD delivers up to 125% more power" that this NanoHD has enough Wi-Fi performance in my modest home. It doesn't.

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Upgrades
