Review on πŸ”’ Enhanced Safety with Cardinal Gates Stairway Special Gate in Sleek Black Design by Carmen Rosario

So far very good for gates and gate extensions

Received and installed 4/19/19. I chose this product based on a review on the Wirecutter website, which called it the best gate for kids at the time. Installation - only four screws required. Contains four short and two long. You better have four more long hauls. They give you two long screws in case you need longer screws on one side of the drywall rig and for stud access, but they should give you four. I used four long screws and didn't use the short ones as I needed longer screws to get to the stud. MUST BE SCREWED INTO THE STUDS. The instructions will tell you which side to screw in first. The side that holds the gate and where it rotates. It was easy to follow the instructions. You then extend the gate to the width you want, attach the other side to the gate and position it where you want to screw it to the opposite side. This is where things get more complicated. I recommend once you have the other side installed, tape it to the wall before screwing it on. Open the gate and close it several times. In order to open and close the gate, it must fall into the openings without friction. If you screw it in before checking, you need to adjust it by removing the screws if it doesn't fall smoothly. No effort is required to open or close the gate. If it's properly aligned, then it's smooth operation. Therefore, stick it on the opposite side. Test the gate. Then tighten the last two screws. If you look at my posted photos you will see that on one of them I didn't insert which caused problems when closing the gate. Hence the extra holes in my wall. Once installed, the gate is very easy to open and close. Exactly as described by Wirecutter and shown in the YouTube video. Also note that this is metal so it makes noise when closing and opening, but you can keep it to a minimum once you get the hang of it. Doesn't close automatically. But all you do is raise and lower it slightly. No manipulation of the lever etc. I use it for the top of the stairs with the mechanism to open away from the stairs only. I will use a different brand of Gate for the floor. I wanted something safe for the top of the stairs. Our stairs do not have wooden railings etc. I hope this helps everyone.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
