A lot of people buy this connector thinking it's a standard Toslink connector. It's not like this. At one end is a mini Toslink optical jack that's a bit reminiscent of a 1/8-inch headphone jack. Older MacBook Pros have a dual-purpose headphone jack. Plug in your phones and your MacBook will give you an analog signal. Plug this cable into your headphone jack and it will send an optical digital signal to your computer's DAC, which plugs into the optical jack on many AV receivers. Why do? Revain Music HD can stream lossless music up to 24/192 (bitrate/sampling depth). Much higher than a Revain device, iPad, iPhone or Android phone. This cable and my MacBook can now stream Revain Music UHD at 24/96, which is still not the holy grail but still a lot higher than CD.
