High quality near field speakers with lots of useful features

After almost 20 years my Cambridge Soundworks DTT 2200 5.1 system was finally a thing of the past so I was looking for new table speakers. to connect to my PC. I got hooked on Edifier after installing some bookshelf speakers for a friend of mine (her R1700BT) but didn't want something that big sitting on my desk. When I discovered they had this "gaming" line, I was glad to take a closer look at them to see how they might work. My first impression was how solid they felt in my hands when I took them out of the box; that's what you should expect from a full-range device. Having seen countless "gaming" branded peripherals in and out of my home over the years, you're almost used to equating the terminology with "cheap and luxury." It's not like this. Installation was very quick and easy. I immediately launched Spotify to get a feel for how sound can fill a room. One thing to note here is that when you are not using the subwoofer, you should place it near a wall or somewhere. where there will be something behind from which the bass will reflect. The difference in range is almost night and day, no matter what sound profile you use. While they are clearly intended for a "small room" setting, I will say that at a decent level they still fill the mid to large sound. The rooms are pretty nice. However, you will definitely get the best quality out of them since you are positioned right in front of them as intended. The overall aesthetic of the speakers should work well with any number of desktop configurations. The lighting is a bit softer than I expected and I was happy with that. Anything much brighter and I feel like the visual distraction can be off-putting. In any case, the lighting can be switched off completely if you just don't want to have it on all the time. The feature that probably surprised me the most was the audio profile selector. Equalizer offers a balanced trio of presets: music, movie, and game modes. Game mode has the most bass, but I feel like most games these days already oversaturate their bass profiles, so I tend to stick with one of the other two depending on what I'm playing. Cinema mode probably has the greatest overall range for movies, YouTube, and general listening, while music emphasizes the higher range more (probably to emphasize vocals). However, I like being able to access presets quickly and easily. I've never given much thought to how dramatically different sound profiles are for all types of media I use on my desktop, but now that I have some control over how these different phases can be presented, it would be frustrating to do so have to dig through the operating system or application menus to achieve the same functionality with different hardware. The Bluetooth connection was instant and the devices stayed paired with my phone long after I was listening. Even after going through several rooms in my apartment and forgetting that they are connected. The result here was mild disappointment and then amusement for me as my wife experienced both shock and confusion when I tried to watch the trailer for the new Mortal Kombat movie while in the bathroom. But of course we don't pretend to Edifier. credit them maybe. Everyone says that I am very satisfied with the product. Unfortunately, we have fewer and fewer things to deal with that last as long as these Cambridge Soundworks speakers did for me; but I take solace in their physical and tonal quality and am optimistic they will remain strong for a while.
