Review on ☕ Brumi Portable Pour Over Coffee Mug, 12 oz, White – Full Circle Cold Brewer by Brittany Jones

If you like strong, good coffee this is NOT for you

This cold coffee maker is a fantastic idea - if only it had a large enough filter bowl to make good, strong coffee scald . You get such a small tank that all you can brew is weak, clear, tasteless coffee that's reminiscent of dirty dish soap. Now there are many people who grew up drinking weak hot coffee from American diners and I think they will like the taste of this coffee. But if you like the strong, flavorful coffees that Italians or Central Europeans drink, or those you buy at Starbucks or Peet's, you're out of luck at this brewery. Making cold coffee is a fantastic idea and you can read about the health benefits online. This is the absolute winner. But you have to know some things. First, you have to use a lot more ground coffee beans to get the same depth of flavor you like from a hot/steam cup. Running cold water through ground coffee beans, by definition, creates less flavor and depth than running hot water or steam through them. So you need more ground coffee per cold brew cup to get the desired strength. The filter container of this coffee machine is completely unsuitable for this. The Brumi designers decided to make the insert small enough to never end up with a good, strong mug. The maximum you get even if you fill the filter to the brim with ground coffee is a weak drink diluted with water. It's quite annoying considering there is a simple solution that will satisfy everyone - just make the filter bigger. If they made the filter twice as big (longer), you could fill it halfway and get a weak cold drink, or fill it all the way and get a strong cold drink. The manufacturer can easily fix this by simply adding an additional larger filter. If they did, it would be a five star gadget. I tried everything to get an acceptable result, but nothing helped: - follow the manufacturer's instructions on the amount of coffee - weak coffee - before use, refer to the instructions on the grind - weak coffee - use of non-recommended fine grinds - coffee a little stronger , but still diluted, weak flavor - filling the tank almost to the brim with both fine and less-fine grist - a grueling job that takes about 60 minutes to brew a full Brumi because the tank is so full of ground coffee is All you can do is add a thimbleful of water once and then use a chopstick to stir the ground coffee to get *all* of that liquid through the filter. This made an almost acceptably strong good drink, but was so cumbersome that I gave up after about 10 tries. This completely defeats the purpose of cold brew, which can easily be prepared overnight if you spend the last hour before bed getting water through your filter. - Brew coffee cold and then keep it in the fridge. for 2 days or more to extract more flavor - still a weak brew. Any brew you can brew in this machine will be clear - a clear sign that you have a coffee that is too weak. Good strong coffee is black, not transparent. When you add milk to a cup of good, strong coffee, you need quite a bit of milk to get even a dark brown cup, and even more milk to get a light brown cup. Here, a few drops of milk, and it's a light brown color. :-(IOW, there is nothing you can do to make up for the small size of this filter. It's a real bummer as Brumi's idea and design is very good. The double glass works well and insulates. The stainless steel filter is great Both materials are safe for health and useful, exceeding what many coffee machines offer (for hot) is also well thought out and works well. All of this suggests that this coffee maker would have 5 stars if it had a large enough filter. If you like strong coffee, don't buy it as is. It's a waste of your money. If you only like weak coffee, this one will suit you. Because I can't give it more than 2 stars for this, but if the manufacturer ever decides to offer a larger filter I'll give it a 5 star review.

Pros
  • Useful for more than it's intended purpose
