My Honda Element AWD was making uncomfortable vibrations/humming and groaning when cornering or reversing out of a parking space. I was worried that it was transmission/drivetrain related and that there was a problem with the transmission or differential. The fluid has only done about 30,000 miles which seems like too much/change interval according to the Element Owners Club forums. I figured I'd spend $30-$40 on 2 bottles of genuine Honda Dual Pump Diff fluid, a fluid transfer pump and 20 minutes of my time to see if the problem is fixed before taking it to the shop and maybe they would tell me I need a new gearbox or differential. After using a 3/8" ratchet socket (no socket attached) in the drain plug while draining the old fluid, I unscrewed the fill plug, drained all the fluid and screwed the drain plug back on. The specification according to the service manual is: 47 Nm (4.8 kgfm, 35 lbf ft). Filling hole until it was full and started dripping from the top filling hole. Filler plug inserted, drain plug double checked and done. The whole work took about 20-30 minutes from start to finish, including gathering tools, cleaning, etc. e. I didn't have to jack the car up, I just got in and grabbed my hand. e Drain and filler plugs. It would be a little easier if I picked it up and put it on stands, but it's not necessary. Took a test drive and has driven a few hundred kilometers since then and the groans and rumbles are gone. Now that I know the factory dual pump fluid won't last 30,000 miles I'll make a habit of changing it every 20km. -25,000 miles on my regular service. I will also use this interval for the transmission oil, since regular oil changes are cheaper than extending the intervals and possibly damaging expensive transmission components such as the transmission or differential. Also, switching to Hondas is super easy anyway, so why not do it! I couldn't find an acceptable aftermarket alternative at local auto parts stores, and at only $13 a liter, why not go with a factory liquid fill? You will need 1.1 liters to drain and fill your diff on a Honda Element so buy 2 liters and a liquid transfer pump.
