This device has a purpose and does it well. If you have an old A/V receiver without HDMI audio, you can easily integrate it with components that don't have digital optical output. I have multiple items running through an HDMI switch and this allows me to pull audio from all devices and send it to one input. I only have to set up the A/V receiver for one input, don't have to worry about switching, and I also have a lot of optical cables. I just connected an HDMI cable from the HDMI switch to this adapter and then from the adapter to the TV. Update 12/22/2019 The device no longer works properly. I have to unplug and plug it back in for it to work. Sometimes I get a "permission not supported" message, which also asks me to turn the device off and on again. While it does what it's supposed to do well, having to turn it on and off every time I use my audio/video system takes away the remotes. I will keep using it until another solution comes along.
