I live in Ohio and currently don't generate much energy due to solar power. So I decided to dive a little deeper into the build quality and include some internal photos. Among other things I have worked in an electronics factory as a hand solderer and reworked parts that came out of wave soldering with solder beetles/balls etc. I am qualified to repair anything including SMT with stereo binoculars. So when it comes to how electronics are made, I have a very critical eye. Honestly, I loved the design of this tutorial. I saw some traces of crafts. The conversion I saw was great. Haven't found anything to complain about here. Even the toroidal coil has been fully encapsulated in epoxy and solidly mounted to take advantage of the large passive heatsink on the back, and this component doesn't even experience heat like MOSFETs, for example. Which of course are physically connected to the passive radiator on the back. The only place I have questions is with the choice of Aishi capacitors. I'd rather see Nichicon or Sanyos or some other high quality Japanese capacitor. If they have problems in the future, I suspect that all problems are due to the possible deterioration and increase in ESR of the Aishi capacitors. If I ever run into problems with one of these devices, I'd be curious to see if replacing the capacitor would solve all the problems that arose. If I ever have a problem with this otherwise great device I will rewire it myself and report the results. nothing but praise for the fit, finish and construction of this charge controller. As soon as I see the sun breaking through the clouds (usually March or April lol) I'll hook it up to my 400W/2 deep cycle solar array and put it through a more serious 'usage test'. I currently have no complaints about the way it's done and would recommend it if you're looking for a new charge controller, especially if you're looking to upgrade from a cheaper PWM setup.
