Functional but poor build quality and usage

I have had a remote thermometer (an Oregon Scientific brand I'm not sure if it's still made) for grilling, smoking meat and even for many years Oven cooking uses oven. This is a very convenient way to keep an eye on what's happening while cooking without the need for visual inspection. While this remote thermometer is functional enough to achieve that goal, the build quality and usability of the device is pretty poor. Let's start with the positive things. The temperature sensor, often the first weak point, is actually well made. The cable is quite strong, long enough and measures the temperature accurately (confirmed by measuring the temperature of boiling water). The base unit connects to the remote unit quickly and reliably. But there are also a few downsides. The overall impression of the remote and base unit is very cheap. Removing the battery cover from the base unit was not easy as the clip was not properly shaped. The buttons on the remote are small, don't register well, and are so close together that it's easy to press the wrong button (or both at the same time). The reliable range between the remote control and the base is quite small compared to other similar products. The manual is poorly written and doesn't explain the features/functionality very well. These disadvantages have to be weighed against the low price. However, this is an average (3 star) product at best. There are others in the same price range that may have average build quality but at least offer a better/easier user experience. Medium (3 stars).
